From today, October 17, “Maxima Latvija” XXX format stores "Riga Plaza" mall, "Domina" mall and Ulmana gatve 88a, as well as in the XX format store in Marupe onions in Latvian flag colour, which are grown by children from “Latvian Mazpulki” (Latvian rural youth organisation), are available.
Altogether, about 1000 kilogramme of onion harvest have reached four “Maxima Latvija” stores which has been cherished by children from “Latvian Mazpulki”. 33 children from all over Latvia participated in the cultivation of onions dedicated for centenary. The biggest harvest of onions - more than 300 kg - has succeeded to breed brothers Lusi from Daugmale.
“Mazpulceni” children are happy to be involved in cultivation of onions because they are relatively easy to grow and weed. For many children, this is the first experience in selling their crops in supermarkets, therefore it is a challenge to process and prepare the product in accordance with marketing requirements. But the children are happy with the result and they are proud to see onions on the shelves of supermarkets, "says Randa Kenge, the chairman of the Council of “Latvian Mazpulki”.
"As the onions are demanding dampness, the biggest concern this summer was the provision of moisture. The crop was small elsewhere, elsewhere it exceeded all forecasts, it varied across the counties, as there was a very uneven distribution of precipitation throughout the territory of Latvia. On the other hand, the dry and hot summer was favourable for not having to deal with the spread of diseases, which is usually caused by wet weather, " R. Kenge continues about the process of growing onions.
"For several years in a row in our stores it is possible to purchase vegetables grown by children and young people from "Latvian Mazpulki" movement. Not only clients are pleased, but also children from “Latvian Mazpulki” because in “Maxima Latvija” stores they can that their work materialize in life – how their carefully grown and packed onions reach the buyer. The cultivation and sale of onions is not only an investment in the development of children's skills, but also in fostering knowledge and understanding about the basic principles of business, "says Jānis Vanags, Corporate Relations Manager of “Maxima Latvija”.
The price of onions dedicated to Latvia Centenary and grown by the children of “Latvian Mazpulki” at “Maxima Latvija” stores is 1,19 euros (1 kg) and 2,25 euros (1,5 kg). Onions in stores of "Maxima Latvija" are delivered with the help of the cooperation partner - cooperative society "Baltic Vegetables".
