Local Strawberries Available in Maxima Stores

June 03, 2019

Starting from June, local Latvian strawberries are available at the largest Maxima stores. The berries are particularly juicy and fragrant thanks to short transportation times and favourable growing conditions in Kurzeme, Tukums County.

“In the past few years, Latvian farmers have been able to offer an increasingly wide range of vegetables, berries and fruit almost year-round; seeing our customers’ large interest in local products, we are pleased to add Latvian strawberries to our range available at XX and XXX stores from the first days of June,” comments Maxima Latvija Director of Purchasing Department Edvīns Lakstīgala.

Currently, the Sonata variety of strawberries can be purchased in Maxima stores; they are popular throughout Europe for their excellent flavour characteristics. The berries are grown in heated greenhouses, with the strawberry harvest expected to last until the middle of June.

“Over the past 15 years, we have gained knowledge and experience allowing us to offer a rich first strawberry harvest. We care for the strawberries during the entire growing process, paying particular attention not just to providing a suitable climate, but also environmentally-friendly pest control. Our greenhouses use so-called ‘biological’ pest control, which allows us to ensure the health of the plants without the use of chemical pesticides. We are proud that we can offer such high-quality, biologically clean berries to the customers,” explains Ar B Agro farmer and Baltijas dārzeņi cooperative member Arvis Bumbieris.
