80% of Vegetables in Stores are Local

September 13, 2018

At the most active time of harvest, the proportion of local vegetables in Maxima stores across the country exceeds 80% of the total assortment. It is important to provide this offer, as according to the Maxima Latvija survey* more than a third of Latvia's population considers it important that fruit and vegetables are grown in Latvia.

“Compared to the previous year’s sales results, the demand has increased for local vegetables such as plum tomatoes, whose sales were twice as much as the previous year, as well as for beet roots (9%) and squash (3%). The trend in recent years shows that during the summer season, people tend to choose more local produce. It is interesting that the demand for organically-grown fruit and vegetables increases outside the local harvest season - in winter and spring. While looking for new opportunities to cooperate with local farmers, we are gradually expanding our range of organic products,” says Edvīns Lakstīgala, Director of the Purchasing Department of Maxima Latvija.

“While visiting the local farms together with children, we had the opportunity to see how many different vegetables are grown here in Latvia. After the visits, with the help of a little imagination and the joy of cooking meals together, I once again realised that kids like to taste vegetables as both healthy chips and cakes, and also as ingredients of various cocktails, ice-cream, soups or pies. In addition, the harvest season continues and we will be able to enjoy various nutritious vegetables, like Swedish turnips, black radishes, beet root, carrots, and fresh and fermented cabbage for many months to come, allowing us to continue choosing local produce to make our menu diverse and interesting,” concludes Laura Grēviņa, Vitamin Brigade Expert and Founder of the Little Chefs' School.

*Snapshot survey was carried out by the order of Maxima Latvija. 700 Latvian residents aged 18-74 participated in the survey. The data was collected in July, 2018.
