Almost 450 CCUH Little Patients Were Delighted and Gifted at a Safe Distance

December 23, 2020

In compliance with the strictest safety and distancing restrictions, Santa Claus visited the Torņakalns and Gaiļezers sites of the Children’s Clinical University Hospital (CCUH) yesterday, December 22nd. He and his helpers delivered gifts to almost 450 young patients and gave a vibrant musical performance, creating a fairytale atmosphere at a safe distance for children who have to spend this Christmas in the hospital.

Early in the morning, Santa Claus and his friends, Olaf the snowman and a reindeer, arrived at the hospital site on their own festive modes of transport to bring smiles to young patients, who watched the hubbub through the windows of their wards and hospital corridors, with musical performances. The specially-prepared gifts, provided by retail chain Maxima Latvija, were given to the children with the help of hospital staff.

“Families and children who must spend the pre-Christmas period in the hospital miss home enormously. It is therefore very important to make them happy and create a feeling that Christmas has not been cancelled despite their illness. Santa’s visit, surprises and unexpected gifts strengthen the children and their parents’ belief in miracles, give them strength to keep fighting and bring a reason to be happy, which is particularly important this year due to the strict COVID-19 restrictions and the complicated economic situation. A special thanks to our Santa Claus—Maxima Latvija—for their years of collaboration and creating a festive atmosphere,” comments Dace Zaldāte-Rozentāle, Head of Communications for the Children’s Clinical University Hospital.

“This year has been a time of unexpected tests and challenges, so it is even more important to find a moment to make each other happy. All children believe in Christmas miracles, and they await Santa impatiently every year, which is why we are truly happy and grateful for the opportunity to gift festive moments for the fourth year in a row to children who won’t be able to celebrate at home with their families. We promise to continue fulfilling children’s dreams by caring for the well-being and welfare of young patients and their families alongside the CCUH,” adds Jānis Beseris, Director of Corporate Relations at Maxima Latvija.
